Building Relationships during a Networking Lunch
There was a great article in Crain’s on Monday by Shia Kapos entitled, “Perks and perils of office lunches”. I just finished reading the article and I found it quite interesting. Having never been in the corporate market, I always owned my own business, it was interesting to hear how the corporate crowd spends their lunch hour.
As a woman business owner, I spend my lunch hours usually networking with someone in my A list, or someone I want to get to know better. Is it for business? Well, every encounter could lead to business, but that is not why I get together with people. I spend my lunch hour with people to find out more about what makes them happy. What type of people they like to work with, or don’t like to work with. What are their goals and ambitions, so that I may be able to help them. My primary goal is to help them, not to get business. If business comes, all the better.
How do you spend your lunch hour?

I have lunch with different people 3-4 times per week. With some people, I am nurturing existing relationships. With others, I am getting to know them better. I think that lunch is an excellent time to get to know people because it doesn’t take any more time out of your way. Never go a week without having lunch with 1-2 new people.
