I have lunch with different people 3-4 times per week. With some people, I am nurturing existing relationships. With others, I am getting to know them better. I think that lunch is an excellent time to get to know people because it doesn't take any more time out of your way. Never go a week without having lunch with 1-2 new people.

You are absolutely correct. Relationship building has no boundaries. You can build a relationship with anyone from any environment. Don't rule people out if it is not in a business setting. Some of your best relationships will come from the retail market.

You did a good job of telling us what you need to do to become a good relationship builder. Making referrals and introductions is so important for making a difference. You will stand out as someone who is connected and will eventually become the "go-to" person as you stated. You need to pothink about helping others first always. By Paying It Forward, your time will come to ask for help.

Great reminder about how little gestures are great for building relationships. You demonstrated a great real world example of how you can practice talking with strangers to improve your communication skills. Also, little gestures like smiling will show that you are approachable and make people feel at ease.

Nice example of how building one relationship at a time is an important networking technique. It is important to focus on finding commonalities with people so you can connect on a deeper level. At the same, you need to find ways to help. People will recipocrate back when you have a need. Over time, you will have built some solid and long lasting relaionships. I enjoy building relationships by providing value and resources through my blog, www.networkinginsight.com and Website, www.jacobsohn.com. Because of these activities, I have built some great relationships.

I agree with you that networking occurs in every situation. You need to be prepared. With relationship building, you need to get to know people first before you focus too much on business, especially if it a social event or wedding. Once people are comfortable, then business creeps into the conversation. After all, you need to get to know people personally and professionally.

Thank you Barbara - Entitlement is something that many of us are familiar with. Even in the networking world, just because we are in a group does not mean we are entitled to receive leads or business. We need to earn the reputation as a quality provider and giver and then we MAY be referrable.
Discrimination in any form is sad, and we should be aware of our own discriminatory thoughts.

Just read your newsletter--I can so relate on the loss and damage issues. In the last 4 weeks I've had to replace: my desktop computer, my printer, my cell phone, and my refrigerator. Plus I lost my cordless phone in the house and still can't find it...

On the men and women thing, I believe that anyone with a strong sense of entitlement (as many males have in many arenas--though most don't even realize it) can make any person look down his/her nose at (or at the chest of) those who do not share such privileges. A colleague once was invited to help TRW figure out why it kept losing its engineers of color and of the female gender. He used his brilliant Inflow software to map communications and it recorded that virtually all exchanges--important and otherwise--were almost exclusively among the white males. Extremely few were communications were ever made with the females and those of color. TRW had its answer--success was out of the question for those who were never admitted to the inner circle, so they simply left.
